Thursday afternoon was our first reading buddy session of the year. We started off by introducing ourselves and then learning all the names of the students in the grade 6 class. We then paired up with a grade 6 student and read a few books. We are looking forward to learning French with them and enjoying books together!
Below is our current tracking graph for reading buddies. The grade 1-2 students keep track of how many books they read and at the end, we record it on our graph. The groups choose their group name, hence the silly group names you see at the bottom of the graph! Our previous graphs only went up to about 50 and now that our readers are much more proficient, I had to make a graph that went up to 150! Big thanks to our grade 1-2 students for being such great role models!
The kindergarten students started the year with the Grade 3/4 students as reading buddies but considering the class size difference, Mme Sadjia and I have decided that her emergent readers and expert French speakers would be a perfect match for the kindergarten reading buddy partners. After reading for 20 minutes, we end with some great French songs. A perfect way to finish our Thursday school day! As you see from the pictures below, all the students were really engaged in their books and enjoying their reading buddy time ☺
A few pictures from last weeks reading buddies with Mme Lola's grade 4 class. I decided to have our reading buddy time in the library from now on because I noticed that all the students were really enjoying the freedom of reading whatever they wanted verses the smaller selection in my classroom library. They not only were really engaged, on both sides, but they are also learning how to use our library. Taking one book at a time and placing a marker to ensure it is returned to the appropriate place. The noise level is also very low as the big kids happily read to the younger ones, it sounds something like literacy love and I love it!
Every Tuesday, Mme Katie's grade 2/3 class will be coming into our class for reading buddies! We are excited to have them and happy to have great role models to help us learn French! Here are some pictures of this weeks visit! |
